May 2015

This past month in 2nd Grade, we wrapped up our school year with an introduction to multiplication and division, learning about motion/magnets, and writing amazing animal reports! We continued to be awesome readers and racked up tons of AR points for the AR store and we got to go on a field trip to Skate Away and Storybook Land.  It was a great year of fun and learning and since it was also my last year in 2nd Grade at Northwestern, I'll always remember it and these great kids!
Happy Summer!

April 2015

This past month in 2nd grade, we worked on different types of sentences: commands, statements, questions, and exclamations. We also talked about ways of communication and practiced writing emails and friendly letters.  In math, we worked on place value to the hundreds, plus adding and subtracting to the hundreds.  In science, we studied two types of energy: light and sound.  In social studies, we continued to work on map skills and even made our own treasure maps with compass rose and map key included!  We also did some technology projects including: making a antonym and synonym wordles, making a popplet, and using google maps. To celebrate Earth Day, we did a writing/craftivity on "If We Were the Lorax".  April was a busy month.  We jump into May with only 3 weeks to go!  We also say goodbye to our Student Teacher, Mr. Preszler.

March 2015

This past month in 2nd grade, we were busy learning about measurement with standard and nonstandard units; local, state, and national government; map skills; biographies and auto biographies; adverbs and adjectives; and the three states of matter.  We made St. Patrick's Day acrostic poems, wrote about what was more important to us than gold, and did a craftivity on How to Catch a Leprechaun.  We also earlier had celebrated our 100th day of school by dressing up like we were 100 year olds!

February 2015

This past month in 2nd grade we worked on fractions in math and also place value to 1,000.  We are currently working on reading and writing numbers to 1,000 and will soon be adding and subtracting numbers to 1,000.  For reading, we read plays and folk tales.  The last story in our text book was a nonfiction article on explorers.  We worked on identifying main idea and details.  For grammar, we've been working on pronouns and possessive pronouns.  We did a writing activity on "If We Were President" and discussed Presidents' Day.  In social studies we continued to talk about local, state and national government.  We just wrapped up our latest chapter in science on the solar system and did a fun Oreo activity on moon phases.  Our new chapter deals with matter.  Of course we also celebrated Valentines Day with a fun class party and welcomed our new student teacher, Mr. Preszler to our room!

January 2015

This past month in second grade we were very busy.  We learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and started studying government in social studies; we studied natural resources in science and how we can protect them....we even made our own recycled projects!  We worked hard on "perfecting" a good paragraph; we wrote our New Year's Resolutions and wrapped up our math chapter on money and telling time.  We even had a speaker from the Dacotah Prairie Museum in Aberdeen come to visit us and show us some games/toys children used to play with in the past.  Who knew history could be so much fun!

Doing story presentations using our iPads.

December 2014

This past month in 2nd Grade was very busy.  We had the hustle and bustle of Christmas programs, Christmas parties and of course wrapping up our first semester.  We finished up our last social studies test on consumers and producers and our last science test on natural resources.  We also finished up the first book in our reading series and ended with the story Click, Clack, Moo, Cows that Type. We also did a writing activity about "applying" for Rudolph's job.  In math we started working with money and we also made Christmas ornaments for our parents.  This first semester was busy but fun and we are looking forward to a great second semester starting in January!

November 17-25, 2014

Well the month of November has flown by! These past two weeks in second grade were busy learning about food chains/food webs in science, a brief overview in social studies about the Native Americans, the pioneers, moving west, and the Civil War. We talked about verbs and past tense verbs in grammar, we made Thanksgiving cards and wrote about why we were thankful for our families, and we started typing in computers!  I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving break. Only three, busy, crazy weeks in December and it'll be Christmas break!

 Making Food Chains...

 Thanksgiving Cards...
We used our faces for the head of the turkey and our hands for the body. We then glued feathers on and added legs.  Inside the card, we wrote: "I am thankful for (mom, dad, etc.) because..."
